- History
Owner John McGilvray started woodworking in 1988 as an apprentice to a master carpenter on Long Island, New York. After five years as a journeyman, McGilvray was placed in a master carpenter position working in all areas of high-end residential building and historic restoration. McGilvray moved to Tennessee in 1995 where he continued to hone his intricate woodworking skills and opened his own custom-cabinetry workshop and trim-carpentry business.
Today, McGilvray Woodworks specializes in custom cabinetry, architectural wood products and furnishings, but are proud to say they can do just about anything in wood. McGilvray Woodworks is housed in a historical warehouse located in the up-and-coming art district referred to as 'downtown north' in Knoxville, Tennessee. The company shares the 17,500-square-foot space with Aespyre Metals, a custom metal shop. Both businesses together, are collectively known as Ironwood Studios. Built in 1924, the Ironwood Studios warehouse was originally home to Coach Buses later on to become Greyhound. The building has a long history of tenants including an alleged bootlegging distribution center.
Ironwood studios plays host to a multitude of events including fundraisers, First Friday's art events and has a gallery to showcase some of our works as well as local artists. To find out more about upcoming events click on the Ironwood Studios link. | - Services
